Castro Retires as Cuban Leader

81 year old Fidel Castro has announced his retirement on health grounds, with his brother, 76 year old Raul strongly tipped to replace him.

Fidel Castro announced his resignation on the website of the Cuban Communist Party’s newspaper Granma.

He said he was “not in a physical condition” to continue as president and commander-in-chief but promised to remain “a soldier of ideas”, writing essays entitled Reflections of Comrade Fidel.

The news has been met with a mixed response by world leaders with US President George w. Bush saying he believed that the change from Fidel Castro ought to begin a period of a democratic transition.

Many people on the streets of Havana however, met the news with dismay.

The Cuban economy is a mess. However this due more to American sanctions, banning trade with the country.

It’s time that America accepted that each country has a right to self determination, without intervention by international bully boys.

  1. ok, I agree with you in thae fact that George Bush is an idiot, but is it really necissary to attack the whole country based on the actions of one stupid president? I mean most of the american citizens believe he is an idiot too, but it is rather self rightous of you to assume we all think the way he does. Personally, I think you are right in what you said about bush’s decisions, but I as an American was very insulted in the way you portrayed us ALL as bullys. Just because BUSH is, doesn’t mean WE as a people are.

  2. My commnts are about your country’s ongoing oveseas policy and certainly not individual Americans. My Brother-in-law is an American ex-serviceman and I have a great deal of respect for him.
However, overseas policy has been ’suspect’ for the last 50 years, so although I personally believe Bush to have created world instability ( with the help of Tony Blair), I certainly don’t think he is the only culprit.
